'The Scarlet Sabre'
« on: July 10, 2009, 02:41:58 am »

This is a introductory to a Starstation I'm creating for my campaign.
I'll put up more detail soon.  Let me know what yer think, Argh!!

Avast there! Ye've come seekin' a' place unshackled by the laws eh? then read on mateys.

'The Scarlet Sabre'

Welcome to 'The Scarlet Sabre', 'ere the docking stations filled with Rum, the Fountains filled with Grog, & the Wenches pockets filled with the Writs of the Galaxy.

Come try yer luck at 'Pieces of Eight' or 'Fifty Cards', 'ere be fortunes, says I.

Or take in a' Wench or Grog at 'The Jolly Rogue' or 'Bar Bebop'.
Share a' tale with 'Tall Terry The Terrible' owner of 'The Jolly Rogue', or share a Grog with Mary 'Bloody Mary' Jones owner of 'Bar Bebop'.

Resupply at 'Stan's Surplus Bazaar' 'ere all proceeds, go to Stan.

& When yer ready to keel over, lay yer weary head at 'Honest Ed's', 'The Crypt' or 'Pile of Bones' all fitted with the most stylish of Sleep Coffin's.

Ahh, But remember one thing, abide 'The Code' for if ye fail, 'The 2nd Council of Ten' will call a' 'BloodHunt'.

@BerkaZerka & LadyZerka
Thanks, 'The Terror of the Solar Frontier' helped in the inspiration as well as my love for pirates Argh!

@Thayan
On the write-up I've done for 'The Scarlet Sabre' I've got about 1500-2000 words & I haven't even finished :-[ I can break it down as I've written details on:
Small Introductory to 'The Scarlet Sabre'
History of 'The 2nd Council of Ten'
The Code
History of 'The Jolly Rogue' & 'Tall Terry The Terrible'
History of 'Bar Bebop' & Mary 'Bloody Mary' Jones
History of 'Stan's Surplus Bazaar' & Stan
History of 'Honest Ed's'

The only things I'm still doing is writing about 'Pieces of Eight', '50 Cards' & putting finishing touches to some Characters.  But yeah I'm interested in contributing, I didn't realize the Contest was still going that would be nice to win a signed book, I might have a better chance at winning a copy than trying to save to buy a copy.
Aaahhh gotta love bills, mortgages & high maintenance chicks  ;D

On your setting material Cowboy, I just had some thoughts –

First and foremost, feel free to use whatever you like in you own campaigns – posting it here is absolutely fine too.  You want to put rockets on Neptune so it can travel the system, for example – fine, post away, that sort of thing is why we have this board  :)

If you’re interested in getting something in the official ‘canon’ , then you’ll need a little background so things don’t conflict with other things.

In that line, you should know that in our upcoming Starship Supplement, we establish the dwarf planet Ceres in the Asteroid Belt between Mars and Jupiter as a Pirate / Outlaw / Smuggler’s moon.

Your material could fit in there, but might require some editing/changes to line up.

Another possibility (that would probably require less alteration), might be to establish your pirate cove in another location in the solar system as a seperate group of pirates, with their own code – different from the pirates of Ceres.

In this vein, you could secret their base on or in orbit of some other remote location – like Neptune or Uranus for example – or hidden among the asteroid field surrounding earth.

Or it could even be more obvious, such as a super resort over Mars with a Pirate Theme, but real piracy going on under the surface…

Anyway, just some info to set you on the right path should you choose to submit something to be included in our supplement.

Either way, you seem to have something cool here :)

I like this idea.

I established the Starstation orbiting one of Uranus moons, I didn't want to put it with Uranus because of the Outpost that already orbits there.  I've got a history done about it, but I might wait to the 'Starship Supplement' comes out so I can work the history with your 'Pirates of Ceres', I'm really looking forward to reading about these guys.

I like the idea of having it orbiting one of the Neptune moons.

The largest of the Neptune moons is Titania, which is actually slightly bigger than the Saturn moon of Rhea (in the setting, Rhea has been terraformed BTW).  Titania the eighth largest moon in the Solar System.

Sorry for being real late on this, I buggered off earlier than I expected.
Here's a brief write-up for 'The Scarlet Sabre' I haven't included character write-ups 'cos I can't find them.  Will include them when I find/write new ones.

'THE SCARLET SABRE'

Welcome to 'The Scarlet Sabre', where the docking stations are filled with Rum, the Fountains filled with Grog, & the Wenches pockets filled with the Writs of the Galaxy.

'The Scarlet Sabre' is a hub for all pirates & rogues to congress, seek refuge or sell/trade their loot.
A fortified Space station that orbits Titania one of Neptune's moons.  Sinister & gloomy, it's a far cry from the sophistication of the SSPB.
'The Scarlet Sabre' would never have come into existence if it weren't for 'The 2nd Council of Ten', the ones responsible for it's existence, & coming up with 'The Code' which is the law that keeps 'The Scarlet Sabre' in existence.

'The Code'

- All must leave their differences outside Neptune's space.  There will be no fighting within this space realm unless it's with the SSPB.

In time of battle all shall fight, & defend 'The Scarlet Sabre'.

All disputes to be taken to the Council for resolve.

Women to be treated with respect, even the Wenches.

Drink Grog.

No cat's are allowed.

If anyone fails to abide 'The Code', a 'BloodHunt' shall be called by 'The 2nd Council Of Ten'.  Where whoever brings the head of the victim before the council, shall receive a 1 year gold pass to all Wenches & Grog.

'The 2nd Council Of Ten'
Many have heard of it, and only the foolish would claim to be a part of it, but no doubt, 'The 2nd Council of Ten' does exist, and its members, keep their secret well.
'The 2nd Council of Ten' is made up of the ten most notorious Pirates & Rogues of the Solar Frontier Seas, & lordship is identified by tokens.  Their tokens of  lordship are well disguised, the true nature of these tokens, known only to each other. Whether pieces of Writ, pieces of junk or a secret handshake, whatever the tokens of the Council may be, they are sought by all.
The SSPB have been trying in vain to identify even one such important captain for nigh upon a century. Though their secret city is equally unknown to the outside.
Stories describe three Pirate Kings, ranked above the Lords of the Council, each having a duty.  One is the 'Key Keeper' able to shut the gates at the docking station, the only way for ships to enter & leave this secluded space harbour.  Another is trusted with the logbooks & Codex, acting as a sole judge in all debate's of any ships articles, & 'The Code'.  The last King is the Treasurer, keeping safe those speciality artifacts & powers, pirates & rogues have found & can't sell or understand.

As for the origin of the name, well the council believed calling themselves 'The 2nd Council of Ten', showed experience.
A lot of their history is lost amongst drunken debates & brawls, otherwise known as 'Politics'

'The Jolly Rogue' & 'Tall Terry The Terrible'
The 'Jolly Rogue' is the largest & oldest of taverns you will find on 'The Scarlet Sabre'.  Inside it's dark walls all manner of activities go on, from gambling, prostitution, trade, to the patron who is genuinely there for a grog.  Behind all the goings on in this establishment is the charismatic yet terribly ruthless, 'Tall Terry The Terrible'.  Terry as you guessed it is tall, very tall towering over everyone at 8ft, as for the rest of his name, that depends if you want to believe Terry or the rumour.
According to Terry, 'The Terrible' came from all the stories spread by the surviving victims of Terry and his band of mischiefs.  But according to rumour, Terry & Mary (Owner of 'Bar Bebop') had a romantic rendezvous which turned into disaster.  Which is true?, no-one knows & no-one is brave enough to ask.

'Bar Bebop' & Mary 'Bloody Mary' Jones
'Bar Bebop' is the stylish more charismatic taverns you will find on 'The Scarlet Sabre'.  Inside it's brightly strobing lit walls (If you suffer from Epilepsy, enter at own risk), you will find this establishment to be in a league of it's own.  The only place where you will see Bouncers(Security) manning the doors, & making sure patrons behave, this really is just a bar.  The only illegal (legal here, remember where you are) activities going on here are those made in discussion amongst the patrons.
The owner of this fine establishment Mary 'Bloody Mary' Jones is described as a beautiful, laid back lass, that all men (And some women) lust to court, but thats as far as it goes, as everyone knows Mary doesn't believe in love, & with her violent background, no-one is brave enough to try.  But she didn't get the 'Bloody Mary' in her name due to her violent history, oh no, that comes from the fact she can drink more grog & be still standing than anyone in the galaxy, & many have tried.

"Stan's Surplus Bazaar" & 'Stan 'Snivel' Davey.
'Stan's Surplus Bazaar' is the place to get things or put in a request to get something.  Stan believes in his policy that anything can be got & sold, & he does at a high price especially items of request.
There is a rumour that Stan is using Ed's (Owner of Honest Ed's) ability to talk constantly, & his love to chat, to find out information about those who stay at 'Honest Ed's'.  After which Stan sends his rogues to follow or attack once they leave Neptune's space.
Stan is a weasely looking character & quite the bargainer, other than that, there is not much known about Stan.

'Honest Ed's' & Honest Ed.
'Honest Ed's' is the most luxurious sleep coffin's Hotel you will find on 'The Scarlet Sabre'.  The only Hotel which has a small bar for those that want a small quiet grog, before keeling over into 1 of 200 most comfy sleep coffins this side of the system.
Honest Ed is the owner of this fine establishment & will be your humble host.  Ed is well liked because he is so humble & honest, but he can drive a man or woman into plotting a crash course straight for the sun, with his constant talking.  Not much is known about Ed's history, especially for someone who likes to talk, but that's the thing, Ed never talks about himself.  There is a rumour that once upon a time, Ed wasn't so honest & humble, but that's just a rumour...or is it.

'Get Jacked' & Dr. Bill 'Cutlass' Smythe.
'Get Jacked' is the place for all your cyberwares.  Inside these walls you will find all kinds of surgical & non-surgical tools.  Look too carefully, & you may start feeling nervous, better not look & just trust the good Dr. after all he is one of the best.
Dr. Bill 'Cutlass' Smthe is a master at his work, & will have you fitted with whatever you want in no time.  Described as 'A ferret on cheap drugs', you really have to meet him to understand this.  He is very energetic & very much on the ugly side, but nowhere near as ugly as 'Gruff' his Cyber Ogre friend & bodyguard.

There are some other place's of interest, such as 'The Crypt' & 'Pile Of Bones' which are other hotels, though not as comfy, other drinking holes such as 'The Crimson Skull' & 'Bucket O' Blood' & more.  The only way to discover what else lurks this side of the system, is to delve into it.

Gambling Games.
There are many games that are played for profit, from your pirate spitting competition to casino gambling.  Here are just a few of the more popular games played.

"Fifty Cards"
This is blackjack, it received it's name 'Fifty Cards' from the pirates who play it, in praise of their ancestors (The two joker cards didn't appear until the 19th Century, thus they throw them out).  Use normal rules for gamble(pg 9 Corebook).

"Pieces Of Eight"
'Pieces of Eight' or 'Pirates Poker' is a dangerous game indeed.  One places his hand on a table & spreads his fingers wide, then he jabs repeatedly between his fingers with a knife.
To simulate play, use the rules for stakes explained under the gamble skill (pg 9 Corebook), roll 1d20 & add the result to your Melee total, if score is 16 or more, you win.  If not, you hit yourself suffering 2L/wounds, no saves her matey.

“Yo-Ho-Ho”
This is your typical drinking contest.  To simulate play, use the rules for stakes explained under the gamble skill (pg 9 Corebook), roll 1d20 + Endure + Will, whoever has the highest total wins, while all others involved fall unconscious (Normal rules apply for Unconscious).

This is pretty nifty stuff - I would use it in my own game and could see some interesting rivalries between the Pirates of the Scarlet Sabre and the Pirates of Ceres  :)

Oh, and I have to ask - Why 'No Cats'  ;D

Isn't it obvious? The guy who owns the place is allergic to cats, and once the dander gets in the air circulation system, it's a total b**ch to clean the filters out. ;)

Either that, or he found out what the Korean take-out shop was really serving and wanted to make a stop to that;D

I can't remember & I can't find the history I wrote up.  It had something to do with one of the Council member's history in how the law came about.  I decided to leave it 'cos it conjures up many things which could turn into great story idea's.
Check out 'Cats...hmph, Too Easy Mate' which I'll be putting up shortly.
