Explanation of Holidays and Events_

Ancestor’s Day: It is said that the spirits of the departed are closest during the last day of Winter’s Birth. Appropriately, this day is revered by Ancestor Worshippers as holy day of solemn worship and offerings to show thanks for The Ancestor’s gift of life and blessings. Faithful Priests among Ancestor Worshippers are required to fast and meditate for twenty four hours following Ancestor’s day, so feasting in honor of these devout Priests is also practiced on the day itself, to help them prepare for their long fast.

Arts Week: A whole week dedicated to the arts. Plays are conducted, poets recite epics, symphonies fill the air, jugglers and tumblers entertain, and everyone displays their finest artistic ability. Contests are held for just about everything; the winners of each being treated like royalty, and then forgotten when the favorite of the next contest is announced.

Capitol Day: (Edo) This day celebrates the founding of the Chinese Shogunate in Edo City. Needless to say, it is significantly more important to the Chinese than the Nipponese and is only observed in the Edo itself. It is a day of military pride with a great parade of Samurai and Dragon’s Breath Cannoneers marching past the Imperial Palace to salute the Shogun, followed by Commoners’ Court, where a select number of commoners, drawn by lot, win the chance to be heard and speak to the Shogun directly, concerning anything they desire.

Children’s Day: Mothers and nurses spend time with their children doing fun things like picnics and games. Small gifts are usually given to each child and colorful open-mouth carp banners are flown on poles to chase away evil spirits that would harm the children.

Flag Day: A day to honor one's leaders by flying the flags of the Daimyo and celebrating their governance. In turn, the Daimyos fly the flags of the Shogun and redirect the praise of their people toward him.

Fox Moon: (Event) Every year on the last day of Mid Fall, the full moon seems to grow bigger and turns a rusty color of orange. Despite its strange cast, it lights the land with an eerie twilight almost bright enough to read by. It is said to be the night of Kitsune, lupines, and werewolves and that looking at the Fox Moon, or staying out under it too long, can cause madness and lycanthropy.

Dragonboat Festival (Edo): Dragonboats, giant ornate vessels of endless variety and garish colors to offend the eye, are oared across the harbor in a ‘win by any means’ race of destruction. Ramming and sinking of vessels is a highlight of the race, which figure-eight’s upon itself twice to increase the odds of just an occurrence. No weapons are allowed, but what is done with oars, ropes, and grappling hooks would make a barbarian cringe. Unarmed combat between dragonboat crews is common and taking over an opponent’s vessel is worth extra points in the judging. Prizes are given for the fiercest-looking dragonboat, for sinking or overpowering an opponent’s vessel, and for finishing the race first. The traditionally prizes are chests full of golden coins.

Harvest Festival (Commoners): The Harvest Festival features feasting, fairs, and barn dancing. It is also a time to celebrate the harvest itself and to thank the land for its bounty. In some of the more rural Provinces, the Harvest Festival also means a chance to catch a ‘prize boar’, where a drove of wild boars are loosed in the village by the reigning nobles. Ribbons tied to the boar’s tusks or tails are worth prizes and gold for those brave enough to retrieve them – in addition to the boar itself.

Holy Day: (Worshippers of The Five Gods) Solemn worship and offerings are made to show thanks for the gift of life and blessings. On this holy day, no Priest of the faith may do any work except that which helps to heal the sick and the afflicted. Long lines of such usually appear at the temples for this blessed service. It must be extended to all, even the evilly aligned, but a stiff offering may be demanded from the offensive and detestable (this assumes however, that the faithful followers will even let them get into line in the first place).

Hunter’s Moon/U-Mani’s Gift: (Event) Every year on the last day of Fall’s End, the full moon appears to swell, as if four times its normal size. It glows with a bluish-white radiance and bathes the land in moonbeams bright enough to read by. It is said to bring luck and is a sign of bravery to hunt under its light. Indeed, those brave enough to do so almost never come back empty handed.

Husband’s Day: Wives give small presents and show their love and admiration for their husbands.

New Year’s Day & Coming of Age (16): Fireworks, folk dancing with candy throwing, drinking, and a popular marriage day. Also the day when all those whose birthday falls within the New Year come of age and are thereafter considered emancipated adults. This is usually accompanied with some form of ceremony, regardless of Caste – and especially Gempukku for Samurai.

Patriot’s Day (Outlying Provinces): A day to remember the heroes and veterans who ever fought for Nippon. It is a day of epic tales and staged battle reenactments to recount the stories of heroes past and legendary valor.

Summerfest: Picnics, contests, dancing, horse races, and such. The holiday ends at midnight when a great clamor is made with bells, pots, pans, and cheering to officially ‘ring in’ the coming of summer. In larger cities, great firework displays are also included in the revelries.

Taxes: (Event) This week is dedicated to the collecting of taxes. Official tax wagons, buzzing with heavily armed guards, visit every city, town, and village to collect the taxes due the Daimyos and of the land – and ultimately the Shogunate. The common tax is one fifth of the year’s increase and is more often than not paid in livestock, grains, and produce, though coins are preferred. Failing to pay ones taxes by the end of Tax Week is a serious offense and can result in huge loss of face, the imprisonment of one’s family, and even Seppuku.

White Day: A day for close friends of equal station to pass small gifts of silver charms among themselves.

Wife’s Day: Husbands give small presents and show their love and admiration for their wives.

Other Events_

New Moon:The New Moon falls on the 15th of every Month.

Full Moon: The Moon is Full on the 30th of every Month.

Kamem: (Cultural Event) On a baby’s first birthday, a party is thrown to celebrate its life. This is a special time, because infant mortality usually occurs before the first birthday. If the baby has survived this long, it is likely to grow up healthy and happy. Handmade gifts (usually small decorations) are given to the child’s mother by family and friends.

Travelogue 2_

  • 30th Day of Mid Spring, 1297 (Holy Day): Roka Wins Keitaro's Preliminary Tournament! The Samurai of Sendai and Rai are called on a new Mission to the Dewa Province and Ho Kasamatu's city of Hirosaki!
  • 1st Day of Spring's End, 1297: On the way to the City Gates to leave on their new Mission, the Company of Samurai meet a So-Kitsune (little fox spirit) named Kioko Kikuchi from the 1900's. After consulting with the Exalted Patriarch of Sendai's Temple of Five Gods, the Samurai leave Kioko with Yuki's mother for the time being - and head out on their mission.
  • 4th Day of Spring's End, 1297: The company encounters the thirty-two red Shinto Arches of the high-mountain pass between the Mutsu and Dewa Provinces.
  • 8th Day of Spring's End, 1297: The company arrives in the Fortress City of Yamagatu and after a day's investigation, find out that Daimyo Noriko Inari (the female Daimyo of the Dewa Province) is not involved, nor eve aware of, Magistrate Ho Kasamatsu's rebellion.
  • 14th Day of Spring's End, 1297: The Samurai encounter a cut bridge crossing a wide ravine in the highlands of the Dewa Province while traveling north to Hirosaki.
  • 19th Day of Spring's End, 1297: The Samurai arrive at the coastal village of Akita.
  • 21st Day of Spring's End, 1297: The Samurai encounter Kojin, north of Akita.
  • 27th Day of Spring's End, 1297: The Samurai finally arrive in the Mutsu Provence City of Hirosaki and find about 2,000 Ronin and Mercenaries camped around the place; Keitaro defeats the Merc Champion Fai in a life-or-death Duel for position of Mercenary Commander over a Company of 100 men and appoints the rest of the Samurai and Company as Captains. Rai discovers an Ebisu Princess being held Prisoner by Ho Kasamatsu.
  • 29th Day of Spring's End, 1297: The Samurai are informed of a dinner they must attend the next day with the False Daimyo Ho Kasamatsu; Plans are hashed out about it and Kirito contacts the Nezumi Ninja Master Thorn (finding out about an army of 5000 Ebisu Barbarians) and summons Lilitu the Succubus. Kirito, Roka, and Lilitu go and speak to the captured Ebisu Princess (after Lilitu makes an 'arrangement' with the Oni-Saru guarding her); Kirito then heads with Lilitu off into the mountains southeast of Hirosaki to find a cell of Thorn's Nezumi Ninja Clan.
  • 30th Day of Spring's End, 1297: Kirito and Lilitu Retun from the mountains in the morning; Roka finally beds Lilitu on his terms, but it may have addicted him to demonic ecstasy...
  • 1st Day of Summer, 1297 (Summerfest): After a horribly failed Ninja assault, the Samurai and company uses Lilitu the Succubus again to break the Ebisu Princess out of her prison and to flee the City of Hirosaki with her. Using the wagon and an Earth Elemental, the team hopes to make it to the Ebisu Barbarians before Magistrate Ho Kasamatu's forces can stop them! They successfully bluff past a small force sent out from the Village of Aomori and continue northeast off the road.
  • 2nd Day of Summer, 1297: The Samurai and company arrive at the Valley of the Barbarian Army, return the Princess, are rewarded in silver, and watch the Barbarians begin to leave. They then continue their flight back to Sendai.
  • 3rd Day of Summer, 1297: The Samurai rest a day in Morioka.
  • 5th Day of Summer, 1297: The Samurai finally return to Sendai and report their mission to Magistrate Saito.

Travelogue 3_

  • 15th Day of Mid Summer, 1297 (Patriot's Day): The Samurai of Sendai attend the Daimyo's Patriot's Day Grand Tournament - one of the only times of the year that the Daimyo actually makes a public appearance! Yuki's Mother wins the Archery Competition; Roka wins the Unarmed Competition; and General Meji wins the Swordsmanship Competition.

Rai finds out that he is really Rai Go-Uda – long lost son of his father, Emperor Tenno Go-Uda, who had been killed by the Chinese during the invasion.

The Samurai of Sendai are informed that they have been assigned by the Daimyo to the services of Kenjiro Yunikawa, retired Wu-Jen of Sendai and Grand Premier Emeritus of the Sendai Order of Arcanum. They are given traveling papers by Chief Magistrate Saito and told to report to Yunikawa's mountain citadel to the west of Sendai in three days.

Keitaro trails and then ambushes Jei Hu, in a semi-failed attempt to get him to confess on paper to setting up his Doshin Miko. In the ensuing battle, Keitaro inexplicably sets a house on fire and then kills Jei Hu. Unfortunately, the house and others around it burn up, killing three commoners and one of Roka's Doshin.

  • 16th Day of Mid Summer, 1297: Keitaro is cleared of the ambush and killing of Jei Hu, when it is found out that Keitaro was right about Jei Hu setting up Miko. Unfortunately, he is sentenced to Commit Seppuku for the arson that caused so much damage. The Samurai of Sendai witness this act and Keitaro's body disappears in a brilliant white light in the same manner that Sakura's did...

The Shaman Priest Kirito Kikigaya suddenly shows up in Sendai, after a 45 day sojourn in the wilderness (looking for and failing to find Roka's thieving Minion Yone). He is tasked by the Chief Magistrate Noburu Saito to rejoin the Samurai of Sendai as replacement for Kaitaro and Jei Hu.

After speaking with the Chief Magistrate Noburu Saito, Yuki (with her mother's cautioned approval) decides to take the little fox spirit Kioko with them when they visit the Master Wu-Jen Kenjiro Yunikawa's Mountain Citadel.

  • 17th Day of Mid Summer, 1297: The Samurai of Sendai set out for the Wu-Jen Kenjiro Yunikawa's mountain citadel - sixteen miles west of Sendai. They arrive to find that Yunikawa has bound at least three major demons to his service, in addition to the four Vampire Samurai-ko.

  • 18th Day of Mid Summer, 1297: 'Uncle' Yunikawa explains that he wants the Samurai to recover an ancient Book of Secrets from a god-protected Shrine high in the mountains, sixty miles north of his citadel. To help them in their quest, Yunikawa grants each of the Samurai a Shared Spell and the service of one of his Vampire Samurai-Ko. He also promises to help them return Kioko 'home' once they have brought him the book and returns the Samurai and their mounts to Sendai via a Gate into the Sendai Order of Arcanum.

Yuki tells the Grand Premier of Sendai about Yunikawa's quest for the Book of Secrets and is directed to bring the Book to the Sendai Order of Arcanum before handing it over to Yunikawa, so that they can make a copy of it first. Kioko is once again left into the care of Yuki's Mother and the Samurai prepare for their journey on the morrow.

  • 29th Day of Mid Summer, 1297: After three day's travel sixty miles north of Sendai and another four day's climbing west into the rising mountains of 'The Spine of the World' as they were known - the Samurai discover a place where the Physical and Spirit World come together and enter the Spirit World.

  • 1st Day of Summer’s End, 1297: After two more days travel into the mountains on the Spirit side of the barrier between worlds, the Samurai come upon a mountain temple plateau. Inside, they find two turtle hermit guards who transform into giants and a Naga Priest and some Kappa that attack. Once defeated, the Samurai find the living bodies of their formerly deceased friends, Sakura and Keitaro, within a magical chamber that also contains the book of secrets and some other texts.

Also seen by Yuki and Rai, the spiritual lines of attunement seem to join Yuki, Roka, Udo, Sakura, Keito, and Yunikawa to the temple somehow; and while only Yuki saw it before it was destroyed, writing on the great slab of the temple read: 'Tomb of The Master of The Deep Earth, who suckled from the grievous wound and crawled forth of his own will against The Five Gods of Creation’

Kirito tries to Teleport the group back to Sendai, but ends up bringing them to Sendai on the Spirit World side. The group then cajole him into risking his health to Teleport them again to the place where they entered the Spirit World originally. The Samurai arrive at the spot and meet a lost Korean merchant (Lee Tae-Hyun) trying to find his way down from the mountains.

The Samurai and Lee exit the Spirit World the way the Samurai had come in, but something goes wrong and they find themselves flung an unknown number of years into the future!

They decide to spend the night to rest, so Kirito can heal and teleport the next morning.

  • 1st Day of Spring, 1306: The next Morning, Kirito attempts to Teleport the Samurai directly to Yunikawa's mountain citadel (in direct opposition to the promise he made Yuki) but finds that he can only get within ten miles of it - and so, arrives five miles west of Sendai on the mountain path that leads to Yunikawa's.

An argument ensues about what to do with the book and party loyalty and Kirito abandons the Samurai to teleport a mile closer to Yunikawa's, while Yuki and Roka give chase in an air elemental. Kirito meanwhile. suffers terrible drain trying to summon Lilitu the Succubus, due to a curse Yuki placed on him before he teleported away. Roka and Yuki get ahead of Kirito and ambush him, giving him one last chance to comply with the team's wishes. Kirito refuses and is slain by Yuki and Roka for his betrayal.

The Samurai all return to Sendai and discover that they have lost eight years and eight months to the Spirit World! Poor Lee is even worse off - having lost an whole seven hundred and eight years and eight months!

Further, they discover that they have long been replaced as Sendai's Yoriki and (in the Daimyo's absence to Edo) are directed by the Chief Magistrate Noburu Saito to complete their quest for the Wu-Jen Yunikawa, until their future status in Sendai can be determined.

Travelogue 4_
  • 2nd Day of Spring, 1306: The day following the Samurais' return to Sendai, they receive a missive from Yunikawa that indicates he is not at his mountain home, but will be arriving in Sendai a week hence to pick up the Book of Secrets recovered from the Naga Temple in the Spirit World.

The Samurai gather at Yuki's Mother's house to discuss the situation.

  • 9th Day of Spring, 1306: Yunokawa returns to Sendai and consults with the Chief Magistrate in a private meeting. He then arranges to meet the Samurai in Lady Shirahata's home for a late dinner to claim the Book of Secrets and reward them for their service. Unfortunately, the evil Spirit Kitsune (drawn to the curious energy of Kioko) ambushed Lady Shirahata as they meal was being prepared and forced her to slay her serving staff and feed their heads to the Kitsune. When the Samurai arrived on Scene a tremendous mental battle was fought - as the Kitsune used Illusions to play the Samurai against themselves - but she was ultimately defeated and Yuki's mother saved.

Kioko's form however, was killed in the battle and had to be retrieved from the Spirit World briefly, after Yunikawa showed up and opened a Gate between the two worlds.

The venue was then moved to the Zen Archery School, while Lady Shirahata's home was cleansed by one of Yunikawa's Water Elementals - and Yunikawa finally received the Book of Secrets and the notes Miya had made while decrypting it...

  • 10th Day of Spring, 1306: Messengers are send to Edo to enquire of the Daimyo about the new disposition of the Samurai of Sendai, following the completion of their service to Yunikawa.

  • 18th Day of Spring’s End, 1306: The Messengers finally return from Edo with word from the Daimyo. The Samurai are released from service as Yoriki of Sendai and back into the Noble Courts. While not a demotion given the circumstances, it is a bit of an embarrassment socially. Only doing something amazing to stand out once again can bring the Samurai back to the forefront of Sendai's elite.

  • 19th Day of Spring’s End, 1306 The very next day the opportunity to shine arises - when the Exalted Patriarch and Master Wu-Jen Yunikawa task the Samurai with recovering the desecrated bones of Sendai's past heroes; hidden in a mass grave by the reprehensible Chinese after a monumental battle near the Village of Kurokawa just before the fall of Sendai when the Chinese invaded in 1281.

  • 28th Day of Spring’s End, 1306: The Samurai of Sendai and Korean Lee arrive in the Village of Kurokawa with Jenna the Samurai-ko, a company of laborers, and a small contingent of six soldiers (to keep the laborers in order). After a search of the area and a Postcognition spell on the part of Yuki, the mass-grave sight is found - in addition to a bit of history on the area in question.

  • 29th Day of Spring’s End, 1306: Something attacks the labor camp in the middle of the night - taking a laborer away and causing a panic that quickly turns into a riot and from there into a slaughter, as the soldiers slay a number of rebellious laborers to regain control of the rest...

  • 2nd Day of Summer, 1303: The village of Kurokawa is attacked by the Wu-Jen Jan Xian - who offhandedly claims to be enacting the will of the Shogun Taiko T’ien Shinhan - just as they start to unearth the bones of their fallen heroes! The Samurai defeat Jan Xian and his Kenku cronies in a glorious battle. Unfortunately, Jan Xian managed to slay all of the laborers before his demise, so Roka was compelled to enlist all the able-bodied villagers to the task. Using Flawless Decorum, Roka also convinced them that it was an honor to do so, rather than a demeaning chore.

A conflict between the Roka and the Korean Lee lead to the Samurai making a prisoner out of Lee. Over the next twenty days, the villagers excavate all the bones of the fallen heroes, while Lee escapes - stealing some of the Samurai's magic wonders as he goes.

  • 9th Day of Mid Summer 1303: The Samurai return to Sendai and take the bones of fallen heroes to the Temple, where they are turned over to the Exalted Patriarch and Master Wu-Jen Yunikawa. There, they find that Lee is back with Yunikawa and still in his employ. Yunikawa then arranges a Gate to the Spirit World and some Ki-Rin summoning apples of gold to fulfill his promise to help them return Kioko to the Ancestors.

After fetching Kioko and making ready, the Samurai enter the Spirit World with her and alight into the heavens upon their Ki-Rin steeds!

The treacherous Yunikawa waits for them to be gone, and then unleashes hellfire and doom upon an unsuspecting Sendai...

Travelogue 5_
  • 10th Day of Mid Summer 1303: Riding their Ki-Rin mounts like glorious comets of fire, the Samurai of Sendai and their charge arrive at the Ancestral Palace, under the life-giving glow of Umani the Moon Goddess herself...
  • 11th Day of Mid Summer 1303: The Samurai meet with the Ancestral Matriarch and Patriarch (and Kirito curiously), leaving Kioko to their care, and then learning of Yunikawa's betrayal, before being given instruction, Blessed, and then sent back to the Physical world. There they see the destruction of Sendai for themselves.

Yuki, Miya, Udo, and Rai Gate to the Village of Kurokawa and encounter three Yori that had come up through the Spirit Well that was left open when the Samurai had left with the Bones of Fallen Heroes. These Yori included Corruption, Malice, and Lust – each with its own Ritual for Banishment.

Roka meanwhile, stays in Sendai to gather allies against the Korean Lee (who was left there by Yunikawa to distract the Samurai). Roka is soon sidetracked however, after an initial encounter with Lee at the Chief Magistrate’s house – involving a conversation at the Blue Wall with Jenna; a three day ordeal in the Other Worldly Mountains and Glen with the Bisan; a battle with the Blood Demon in the Heart of Creation; being drawn in, separated into infinity, and drifting through time; carrying something evil and sinister back with him; saving the Chief Magistrate, General Meji, Yuki's Mom', Daughter, and Student; and Yuki's Mother seeing something inside Roka's time distorted aura with Sorcerer's Sight that she wasn't supposed to - which subsequently lashed out - banishing her mind into chaos...
  • 12th Day of Mid Summer 1303: The Samurai in Kurokawa finish their cleanup of the village, with Yuki finding out about her mother’s grave condition. Opening a Gate to Sendai, Yuki is able to use a mix of Magic and Feng-Shui to heal her mother’s mind. Lady Shirahata then joins the Samurai (with Roka as well), back in Kurokawa to seal up the open Spirit well – using a Master Craftsman named Najin to quick-build a Spirit Shrine.

The Spirit Shrine is completed just before dusk – when Mount Fuji erupts and the attuned Samurai feel that Yunikawa has just died!

Later that night, the Samurai (with General Meji, Lady Shirahata, and Priest Kan) track down and exterminate the Korean Assassin Lee.

  • 13th Day of Mid Summer 1303: The Daimyo Shinsen Hasekura returns to Sendai with the Grand Premier Kenji Nogachi through a Gate. They are accompanied by the Emissary of the Shogun, Imperial Magistrate Jiang Li Feng and her entourage - including two dozen Chines Dragon's Breath Cannoneers, and Win Pan - the man who killed Miya's father.

The Grand Premier Kenji Nogachi uses magic to retore the Daimyo's Palace and other buildings in Sendai, including the Royal Bathhouse. The Samurai of Sendai are assigned to guard the Imperial Magistrate and Chinese Delegates as they bathe - when a Naga High-Priest and five Naga Ki-Masters attack!

The Naga are defeated (and Miya slays Win Pan), but not before Yuki is killed and returned to the Naga Shrine in the Spirit World. There, she finds the Inner Sanctum desecrated with the Bones of Fallen Heroes and the Stasis Field no longer active. Yuki also finds Sakura and Kaitaro turned to stone and sees with Postcognition that Yunikawa was behind everything.

Yuki then returned to the Samurai - taking the statues of Sakura and Kaitaro with her to the Temple of the Ancestors.

The Samurai meanwhile, are next directed to go with General Meji and the Army of Sendai to assault Yunikawa's mountain citadel - the magical blue wall having mysteriously fallen during the Samurai's battle with the Naga.

The Samurai finally get the Naga Book of Secrets, upon finding Yunikawa's Citadel destroyed - and Jenna the Vampire Samurai-Ko having save the book for them.

Realizing the graveness of the Situation, the Samurai head to the Ancestral Palace upon Ki-Rin Mounts.

In a bid to stop them, Yunikawa kills himself to cause them to transform further into Masaki-Dai-Oni - after sending Infernimus the Corrupted Elemental Dragon after them.

The Samurai then go to the Heart of Creation, where Yuki uses Epic Magic to travel back in time with the Samurai - to undo the entire mess at the source, by plotting to kill the baby Yunikawa.
