Nimbus
The Saint
Gilles' Nimbus appears as a benevolent shower of healing light that burns with holy power - which is nevertheless tinged with some ineffable sort of darkness, a hint of the hell that taints his soul.

The Killer
When the Killer is in control of Giles the nimbus inverses itself entirely - his magic appears as a foul black cloud polluting the air, reeking of despair and hatred, the occasional bit of light streaks through the cloud - almost like crackling energy, though it never leaves the cloud, trapped.

Physical Description
Giles Moreau is not a physically imposing man. He is of average height, with short cropped black hair and handsome features, his skin pale from a life of study. What he lacks for in physical strength, however, he makes up for with the presence of a giant. Taught persuasion and inspiration by Father Armand, and driven by his powerful beliefs, Father Moreau strikes others as a great man, one of iron convictions and unshakeable faith.

History
“There is no sinner like a young saint.”  ― Aphra Behn

Giles Moreau was born a bright summer day in Portland, Maine, to Theresa Moreau, wife to Gerard Moreau. He was named after his grandfather, a French battle-medic who was killed in the first world war during the Battle of Verdun while tending to wounded in the field. From a young age Giles sought to follow in the footsteps of his namesake - he was easily captivated by stories of his grandfather's heroism and sacrifice, and found the idea that someone would risk, and ultimately sacrifice their life in order to help others to be both terrifying and... amazing. He would ask his father, almost every time he was told the stories - "Why? Why would he do that? His life, his family, everything he ever had - why would he put it at risk like that? Why would he give it up for strangers? People who meant nothing to him?", his father would always answer the same - "Because they didn't mean nothing to him, Giles. Every living soul meant the world to him, every bit of suffering he saw, he felt as deeply as the people it was inflicted on. He wanted the best for everyone, always, and he did whatever he had to do to make their happiness a reality. Never a kinder man lived, never a more undeserving man died."

When he was 9, Giles' father got a call late at night about an emergency at his job - he worked as a chemical engineer and apparently there had been a spill, his help was needed to clean it up. While he was backing out of the driveway, a car slammed into the driver's side at about 50 miles an hour. Giles was awake and watching when the medical workers pulled his dad out of the wreckage and sped off to the hospital, his mother close behind them, her eyes wet with panicked tears but her voice telling him that everything would be alright, promising him that this wasn't how it would end.

His mother went to the hospital's chapel every day after the accident, and she would take her son with her each time. She told him to pray for his father, and so he did, hoping it might do something - but his dad's condition never improved in the slightest. He would just lie there, day after day, rotting in his own skin. It was enough to make Giles lose his faith - not just in God, but in the very idea of good. He would see the stories of his grandfather in a different light, and always remember his father's words - "Never a more underserving man died". It was the fate of good men then to die undeservedly, yes?

When he was 16 Giles was caught dealing at his school and was sent to Juvie, where he met Father Armand, a speaker who'd been brought in to talk to the young juveniles and convince them that there was a better way for them. Armand... was a man like no other. He spoke with a conviction that would sweep aside any doubts and carry his listeners down whatever road he wished them to take. Giles in particular was moved, and after he was released he kept in touch with Armand, and took up a tradition that he had long since abandoned - every day, he would go to Father Armand's church and he would pray for his father's health, he would pray for his mother's forgiveness, and he would pray for his own forgiveness - for betraying himself to his fears and his insecurities. he would begin to take up work with Father Armand for dealing with poor and injured youth.

When he was 23 (in Seminary School at the time), Giles was coming back from visiting his mother. It was late at night, and cold - it was the middle of January, and the snows had been thick that year. Walking into his apartment building, he heard a whimper come from a nearby alleyway. Investigating, he soon came across a thin, emaciated woman holding a blanket-covered child to her breast who had taken cover by a nearby dumpster. His heart going out to the two, he offered the woman a warm place to rest in his apartment. It was only after he made the offer that Giles realized she was dead.

His heart heavy, Giles pulled the child out of its dead mother's arms and brought it into his apartment, where he promised himself he would raise it as his own.

Two days later, Giles' father woke up for the first time in 14 years.

Giles is now a newly minted priest, 27 years old. He spends most of his time trying to help juveniles the same way father Armand helped him. He lives close to his parents (who have unfortunately been separated - the extended absence from each other's lives was too much for their relationship), and takes care to visit his father often - making up for lost time. He thanks god every day for giving his family back to him, and has named his new daughter Faith, after what he believes has saved his life.

Allies
XX

Notes: Something happens that causes Extreme Multiple Personality Derangement.

Quote
Effect: A character with multiple personalities can manifest different Skills or perhaps increased or diminished Social Attributes for each identity (the number of dots allocated to your character’s Social Attributes are rearranged by anywhere from one to three).

So, I would have the second stat set (X∫X) or something, following the base character.

I figure you could Move (not Add):
  • 1 Point in Mental Attributes
  • 3 Points in Social Attributes
  • 3 Points in Each Skill Column
These would be determined once and set for the life of the character. Improving the Killers Skills for example would have to be done to the base Character (one could say the Saint upped Firearms while under the influence of the Killer for example)...

NOTES: I am leaning toward having the Saint suffer from black outs, when the Killer comes out - not knowing about the Killer at all (other than clues inadvertently left behind from the Killer's activities; though the Killer will take great care to hide his activities from the Saint).

Like the Saint, the Killer also blacks out during the Saint's reign, but will know about the Saint however, because the Saint has an established life that can be easily discerned through observation and simply putting two and two together.

For example, the Killer simply looks at his ID when he comes out, notes that he is wearing a priest's collar and is standing in a cathedral (yet again), and laughs manically at the sweet irony of what he is about to unleash...

Learning Curve (Cleaning House)
Fear, Uncertainty, Surprise

Saint is terrified that becoming a disciple is going to turn him back into his old self - the self who was corrupted by his mother's deal with the devil. He's not sure what's happened, but he knows that he had a violent outbreak while he was "unconscious" and he's afraid that it'll happen again if this continues. He doesn't quite trust himself anymore, particularly around Faith, and plans on making a deal with the Shadow Bouncer to keep Faith safe at all costs, no matter what - even against himself. Especially against himself, in fact.

He had no idea when he accepted the calling that there would be this much violence involved, and he's afraid that because of it he's going to end up giving in to his natural lust for Wrath.

Despite this, he has no intention of quitting, and after seeing what Kark did to those children, he is more resolute than ever that his mother has to die, and soon.

---

Learning Curve (Loose Ends)
Saint has realized that he is not as strong in the face of evil as he might think. He thinks that he's either suffering the after effects of his magical powers (like Beats and Robor) or, worse, that he's not strong enough to endure the horrors that he's facing and coping with it this way (which is not entirely untrue).

He wants to be strong for faith and for the others though, and he will never give up his service to the Lord.

He impatiently awaits Sarapheen's return, as he feels he is missing her guidance. He wants to learn how she became strong enough to endure the loss of her friends, and he wants to become a better disciple, that he might not fail the others when they rely on him.

He's happy to know that his blackouts are not mere rampages, as he can see that he did quite a bit of good this time around, especially in "saving" Miguel's soul. Relating to spirits in particular he wants to learn how to help the dead pass on and his new focus has become the spirits of the children at the estate, whom he will keep company until he manages to achieve the means to free them from their anchors.

---

Learning Curve (Dark Web)
Saint
Saint didn't actually learn much from this adventure, seeing as he wasn't present for most of it >.>

However, what he did learn is that his family is not safe. He needs to constantly be on his guard. He let Faith and Usdi be kidnapped from his own home, he'd been too lax. His earlier attempts to secure a bodyguard for Faith were the right thing to do. As soon as the bouncer spirit comes back he will make whatever bargain is necessary to have it guarding Faith at all times.

Knowing that he has been putting Faith into danger by association, Saint is considering sending her away - or asking Sarapheen for advice on where he could send her. A school where a disciple is a teacher or maybe an area more closely monitored by angels being ideal.

He will take care to invite Usdi over to watch Faith as often as she finds it agreeable, taking on the massive hit to his food budget voluntarily while using Life to supply Usdi with a steady supply of exotic and delicious fruits in the hopes of getting her off her junk food habit.

Saint is also unable to account for how much time and how intense his blackouts are becoming. He has resolved that if he has another blackout he will seek out Morrowind and ask him to examine his mind. If he cannot trust himself then he cannot protect Faith, and he certainly cannot serve his fellow disciples.

Killer
Killer is enjoying the benefits of subtlety. Not once this time did any of the other suspect him, and he was even able to commit a most gruesome murder without anyone batting an eye - an accident of course, and a deserved kill at that, but still enough to get the blood boiling.

Knowing that he has to keep his influence hidden, Killer intends to take advantage of his newfound powers of control to keep his kills bloodless - he does not want to raise Saint's suspicion anymore than he already has with the consistent blackouts.

He is certain that Saint will eventually do something drastic and stupid like go to Morrowind to turn himself in and intends to take measures against that through both Miguel and, perhaps eventually, the Shadow Bouncer. He cannot have Saint ruining what they have going.

He has come to see himself as not only the stronger of the two, as he remembers everything while Saint does not, but as the one responsible for protecting them from harm. He has made Saint's sanity a priority, and is strongly considering offing Faith if protecting her consumes too much of Saint's time and resources. He believes that he is Giles Moreau - the man that Saint suppressed every since Father Armand taught him weakness all those years ago, and he will do what needs to be done for them both.

---

Learning Curve (Forgive Me Father For I Have Sinned)
Killer is getting seriously bored. He's starting to realize that he misses having the Saint in control, having to spend all of this time around these people he can't kill is agonizing, and having unfettered control has ruined the joy he used to feel when taking a life. He needs to amp things up soon or he'll go stir crazy. Hunting the vampires took a bit of the edge off but he needs more, and his fellow disciples and Sarapheen are looking more and more tempting. He's already fantasized dozens of ways to kill or capture them all - Sarapheen's fate likely the worst, to be sealed away in a soul jar so that she cannot revive herself, and thrown to the bottom of the ocean to rot.

At this point, even he's considering going to Morrowind to bring Saint back - maybe he'd be able to lie his way into seeming like a protective personality rather than a murderous one so that he could stick around, and really he's pretty much both right? Anything but this constant, maddening, unfulfillable need.

I feel like we need to better define the Killer's Derangement while in play.

If you just want it as an excuse to cause internal mayhem among the party while the Killer is out, then I have a problem with that. It reminds me too much of someone playing a Kender in D&D just to be a dick haha!

I figure you of all people will be much subtler than that of course, but I want to hash it out with you, so as to feel we are both on the same page.

I would prefer something really straight forward - such as, the Killer NEEDS to Kill someone while out. Someone being a human, innocent or not (innocent is better) - but would like to think the Killer is not foolish enough to go after someone near him, that would arouse suspicion.

If the Killer killed Faith for example, the quorum would almost certainly figure it out quickly, even enlisting divine help - which would at best be too fast a cure for the Saint's Derangement - and at worst, lead to the character's death or NPCing status for later gruesome death at the hands of vengeful Disciples.

I also think that the Killing Derangement shouldn't automatically mean sadistic either. Sadistic killings of the Derangement-sating target yes, but not a general sadistic bent just by virtue of the Killer coming out.

I could envision a Dexter-like character here.

As for how quickly the Killer needs to kill after emerging, the longer the interval, the more likely he will be able to remain in play for extended periods of time. From our initial take, I figure that the act of Killing will sate the Killer, allowing the Saint to come out once again to discover the pieces and try to make sense of it all.

Thoughts?

That first bit about causing mayhem in the party is actually why I asked you if this would trigger rather than just doing it, I know it can be troublesome so I wanted to clear it with you first, haha.

When I was making the character I was thinking he'd go crazy evil when the killer takes over (as seen in his first evil streak), but I loved Dexter and you bringing that up makes me suuuuper happy to change that.

I like the idea, works out pretty well

But as for Faith and the Quorum and everything - I feel like the killer needs to actually know what's going on so that he can know to avoid doing those things (which makes it kind of hard for me) - could the killer "remember" what the Saint does? Saint having the amnesia is fine but the killer having it complicates things.

Yeah, I think in order to stay below the Disciple's radar, the Killer will have to remember the Saint's memories - which would lead him to truly believe he is the true personality and the Saint is the derangement. He pretty much has to and keep his Killings careful and mundane to avoid magic being used to figure him out too quickly.

Yeah, it doesn't make sense for the Killer to come out, then screw over the very magi that can actually help save him from becoming a thrashing torso-tree.

Actually, he was still quite focused in his initial appearance. He needed to kill. There was a threat that could easily be turned to a case of "self defense" that he went after. He knew he had bad-ass new mage powers. And it made him careless. He saw what it got him and now realizes he has to be more calculating and subtle when picking/killing his targets.

On a side note, I see that giving Miguel a semi-permanent physical body is as simple as finding some victim, removing his soul, then binding Miguel's soul to the body.

---

Sever the Sleeping Soul (Death •••)
The mage severs a soul from a Sleeper. While the soul is separated from the body, the subject suffers all the normal afflictions of soullessness. See “Soul Loss,” p. 276.
.
Practice:  Fraying
Action: Extended and contested; target rolls Resolve reflexively
Duration: Lasting
Aspect: Vulgar
Cost: 1 Mana

The mage must touch the target for the entirety of the spellcasting. If he loses contact, he loses all accumulated successes. (With Death 5, he can cast this spell at sensory range. The spell cannot be cast sympathetically.) Needless to say, the victim must be rendered incapable of moving or escaping for the full length of the spellcasting. Relying on a grappling hold for a conscious victim is unwise, since the victim gets a chance to throw off the hold each turn, while it might take hours to complete the extended casting. The target number is equal to the subject’s Willpower. Only a limited number of rolls are allowed for the caster, however, before his attempt is deemed a success or failure. A number of rolls may be made equal to his Resolve + Composure. If the spell fails, it cannot be recast on the same target until at least one day (24 hours) has passed.

A reflexive and contested Resolve roll is made for the target against each of the spellcaster’s rolls. If the target’s rolls succeed at any point during the extended casting, the casting fails.

While the soul is free of its body, it exists in Twilight. The mage who severed the soul can see and touch the Twilight soul. Mages who use this dread magic usually store their soul bounty in a Soul Jar (see p. 137) to prevent its escape. See “Soul Handling,” p. 276, for more details about unmoored souls.

---

Soul Binding (Death ••••)
The mage can attach a stolen soul to himself or another, but only if he or the target currently has no soul.
.
Practice:  Patterning
Action: Extended (target number = one for a Sleeper’s soul, Gnosis for a mage’s soul)
Duration: Lasting
Aspect: Vulgar
Cost: None

The target number is equal to the recipient’s Gnosis, or simply one success if the target is a Sleeper. The soul then belongs to the recipient. See “Soul Handling,” p. 276, for more details on handling unmoored souls.
